چکیده

Ahtract--The sorption of hydrophobic compounds (aromatic hydrocarbons and chlorinated hydrocarbons) spanning a concentration range in water solubility from 500 parts per trillion (ppt) to 1800 parts per million (ppm) on local (North Georgia) pond and river sediments was investigated. The sorption isotherms were linear over a broad range of aqueous phase pollutant concentrations. The linear partition coefficients (Kp) were relatively independent of sediment concentrations and ionic strength in the suspensions. The Kp's were directly related to organic carbon content for given particle size isolates in the different sediments. On an organic carbon basis (K,, = Kp/fraction organic carbon), the sand fraction (>50#m particle size) was a considerably less effective sorbent (50-90% reduction in K~) than the fines fraction (>50#m particles). Differences in sorption within the silt and clay fractions were largely related to differences in organic carbon content. Reasonable estimates of Ko,'s can be made from octanol/water distribution coefficients, which are widely catalogued or easily measured in the laboratory.

Development of a reference artificial sediment for chemical testing adapted to the MELA sediment contact assay.

Most persistent organic pollutants, due to their hydrophobic properties, accumulate in aquatic sediments and represent a high risk for sediment quality. To assess the toxicity of hydrophobic pollutants, a novel approach was recently proposed as an alternative to replace, refine and reduce animal experimentation: the medaka embryo-larval sediment contact assay (MELAc). This assay is performed wi...

Sorption of PAHs in the Soil Environment with Emphasis on the Role of Soil Organic Matter: A Review

Recently sorption of organic pollutants, in particular polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), has received much attention and researchers agree that organic matter (the amount of organic matter and its nature) is the most important factor affecting the sorption, desorption and fate of organic pollutants in soil and sediments. It is well documented that organic matter of soil and sediments is ...

Relationship between biodegradation and sorption of phthalate esters and their metabolites in natural sediments.

Regulatory evaluations of commercial chemicals in Canada, the United States, the European Union, and other countries aim to identify biodegradation rates of chemicals in natural soils and sediments. However, commonly used biodegradation testing methods are limited in their capacity to determine biodegradation rates under natural environmental conditions. As a result, widely varying biodegradati...

Effect of Cosolutes on the Sorption of Phenanthrene onto Mineral Surface of River Sediments and Kaolinite

Sorption of phenanthrene onto the natural sediment with low organic carbon content (OC%), organic-free sediment, and kaolinite was investigated through isotherm experiments. Effects of cosolutes (pyrene, 4-n-nonyphenol (NP), and humic acid (HA)) on phenanthrene sorption were also studied by comparing apparent solid-water distribution coefficients (K d (app)) of phenanthrene. Two addition sequen...

Potential for plastics to transport hydrophobic contaminants.

Plastic debris litters marine and terrestrial habitats worldwide. It is ingested by numerous species of animals, causing deleterious physical effects. High concentrations of hydrophobic organic contaminants have also been measured on plastic debris collected from the environment, but the fate of these contaminants is poorly understood. Here, we examine the uptake and subsequent release of phena...
